Portal safety: what your Shield of Peace doesn’t protect
An open portal is a route into your City. Learn what the shield covers, what happens during a portal attack and what to check before logging out.

A shield protects direct City attacks
A Shield of Peace prevents enemies from attacking your City directly. An open portal is a separate route through which they can still reach your army.
A portal attack bypasses both your Shield of Peace and your City Walls. Do not treat a shield icon as proof that an open portal is safe.
What you can lose
If an enemy wins an attack through your portal, they can plunder building resources, Food, Silver and Gold Ingots. Losing the fight also closes your other open portals automatically.
You should therefore include portals in your defence routine, even if you opened one only for a quick trip and your City is still shielded.
Why the return route can change
Portals act as shortcuts. March routing uses the available point nearest to the destination, and a march can return through a portal while it remains open.
Closing a portal can redirect returning marches to another available portal or to the relevant City. A City teleport can also change which route is shortest. Check the revised return time rather than relying on the estimate you saw before changing the route.
Before opening a portal
- Decide what activity the portal is for and how long you need it.
- Check the location and your Clan’s rules for using it.
- Review the troops and exposed resources you are leaving in the City.
- Make sure you can remain available for the activity and return journey.
Portals cannot be placed on another Clan’s territory. Travel to other Kingdoms is restricted to Clash of Kingdoms; check that event’s current conditions before planning a cross-Kingdom trip.
Before closing it
Look for returning marches and coordinate with Clanmates who are relying on the portal. Closing it is permitted while armies are returning, but the changed route may mean a longer journey.
After closing, check the map and march list again. Do not assume that one closed portal means every portal you opened has been closed.
Before logging out
- Review every open portal and close those you no longer need.
- Confirm your army’s return routes and arrival times.
- Check the Shield of Peace on the City separately.
- Review your resource exposure and any ongoing Clan activity.
Increasing portal duration is convenient, but it also makes it easier to leave a forgotten portal open for longer. The Portal Master guide explains duration and capacity upgrades.
Check current requirements in-game before committing troops or resources.
