Food and training
Why your troops suddenly cost more: food deficit explained
Understand why a stocked City can still have a food deficit, what increases training costs, and what to check before recruiting more troops.
ClanOps · Updated

The first thing to check
Open your Food details before blaming the troop price. A red Food counter indicates that hourly production is below army upkeep. This deficit raises training costs, even when you still have Food in storage.
The bigger the shortfall, the greater the penalty. Stored Food and hourly Food balance answer different questions: how long can your army eat, and can your City support it sustainably?
A simple example
Suppose your City produces 100,000 Food per hour and your army consumes 130,000. Your net balance is minus 30,000 per hour. Having 1,000,000 Food stored does not change that hourly shortfall.
At that unchanged rate, the reserve would last about 33 hours before accounting for other spending or income. This is an illustration of reserve depletion, not a formula for the training-price penalty.
Deficit and famine are different
| Situation | What it means | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| Production below upkeep | You have a Food Deficit; training costs increase | Compare hourly production with upkeep |
| Food reaches zero | Famine reduces army strength and health by 25% | Replenish Food and address the shortfall |
| Plenty stored, negative hourly balance | You have a reserve, but the deficit remains | Improve production before your next large batch |
Diagnose a sudden price increase
- Select the same troop type, tier and quantity you trained previously.
- Check the Food counter and compare production with upkeep.
- Review whether a production boost expired or your active Captain setup changed.
- Consider whether recent training or revival increased your army’s upkeep.
- Compare the displayed batch price again after adjusting your setup.
Change one thing at a time when testing. Comparing a larger batch of a different tier will not tell you which bonus caused the difference.
Improve the balance before training
Review your Farmers’ Houses, food-production research and available production bonuses. Helen’s food-production role can help if you have her. Recheck the final balance after activating your setup rather than assuming a particular Captain level will remove the deficit.
Gathering or receiving Food restores reserves. It does not increase the hourly production figure, so it is a short-term supply measure rather than the same solution as improving production.
Plan for the army you are about to recruit
A batch that is affordable now still adds troops to maintain. Review your food balance again after a large recruitment or revival session, especially before leaving the game for several hours.
